πΎ Meet Jonathan XV, the Pup-coming Siberian Husky Star at UConn π
TL;DR; π: UConn is set to pass the mascot torch to Jonathan XV, an adorable 2-month old Siberian Husky born in Canada π¨π¦. This fluffy good boy πΆ will step into the pawprints of his predecessor, Jonathan XIV, who’s served dutifully since 2014 but is heading towards a well-earned retirement in October. Jonathan XV is already under intensive mascot training, prepping for a fall debut packed with school spirit, social media promos, and sports event appearances.π
In the hallowed halls of the University of Connecticut, a new celebrity has arrived, and it’s not your regular star quarterback or basketball prodigy. It’s a pup! Say hello to Jonathan XV, the Siberian husky who will soon be taking up the reins (or rather, leash) as UConn’s official mascot. But wait, is it even legal to be this cute? π
Our newest star was born in Ontario, Canada, on April 19, joining the world as one of a litter of six. He’s been in Connecticut since June 17, presumably getting used to the vibe, basking in the UConn Husky pride, and of course, preparing for his upcoming reign. But don’t let his tender age and fluffy fur fool you. He’s not just a mascot-in-waiting, he’s a hardworking husky-in-training. πΎ
Living with the same host family as the current mascot, Jonathan XIV, our soon-to-be crowned husky is learning the tricks of the trade and how to nail the tail-wagging duties of a university mascot. So, is it a rite of passage for a husky to live with his predecessor or just pure coincidence? π€
One thing’s clear though – Jonathan XV is a pretty fast learner. School spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz reports, “He does things like sit when his big brother sits and really looks up to him.” Doesn’t that just melt your heart? π₯Ί
Jonathan XIV has set the bar high during his reign. Despite a medical scare earlier this year, this resilient Arkansas-born husky has proven he’s made of strong stuff, even traveling to Texas to support the men’s basketball team during their NCAA championship win. Let’s hope Jonathan XV is taking notes! π
The handover process is set to be a gradual one, with the two Jonathans making joint appearances for a while. However, come October, our puppy prodigy will be stepping up to fill some pretty large paw prints left behind by his retiring older brother. How will he handle the pressure? π
This is no ordinary tradition. The legacy dates back to 1933, with each husky christened Jonathan in honor of Jonathan Trumbull, the last colonial and first state governor of Connecticut. This fluffy tribute is not just about honoring the past, it’s also about embodying the spirit and vigor of the UConn community. How cool is that? ποΈ
The responsibility of caring for these doggy dignitaries falls upon the shoulders of the co-ed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. A brotherhood of mascot minders, perhaps? π₯
As we prepare to bid adieu to Jonathan XIV and extend a warm welcome to Jonathan XV, we’re left wondering: how does one really prepare for a life of fame and cuddles as a university mascot? Is there a secret mascot academy we don’t know about? And finally, will Jonathan XV carry the torch as proudly and adorably as his predecessors? Only time will
