🌊 Cali Surf’s Growing UP! 13ft Waves Say “Hello” to Warmer Planet πŸ„β€β™‚οΈ

TL;DR; πŸš€ The ocean’s telling us something! Waves off California’s coast are reaching a whopping 13ft in height, all thanks to our warming planet. Hang ten, or maybe hang thirteen? πŸ€”

Once upon a time in sunny California, surfers hunted for that perfect wave. But who would’ve thought they’d be dodging 13-foot giants? 🌊

Remember when Capitola Wharf had a “minor” glitch and got a chunk taken out on Jan. 5, 2023? Yup, you guessed it, one of those 13-foot monsters was responsible. But what’s bringing these beastly waves to California’s shores? The globe’s getting a fever, and the ocean’s getting restless. 🌑️

Peter Bromirski, our genius Oceanographer from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, decided to play detective πŸ•΅οΈ. Instead of the usual wave-watching buoys, he dug into seismic records from 1931. Like, who even thinks of that? Apparently, when a wave says hello to the shore, it sends a ripple right through the seafloor. The bigger the hello, the bigger the wave.

Now, previously, folks trusted buoys set by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to tell us about waves. But their stories only went back to 1980. Bromirski wanted the juicy deets from WAY back. So, with his crew of young ocean nerds, they dived into decades of seismic waves. The result? Waves, on average, have grown a foot since 1970. And the 13-foot biggies? They’re crashing the party twice as often between 1996 to 2016 than they did from 1949 to 1969. 😲

Ever heard the beaches say, “It was better back in my day”? It’s kinda true. Bromirski found out that there were times of super chill, small waves before 1970. But after that? Zilch. Nada.

The consequences? Besides epic surf sessions, we’re also seeing more erosion, coastal flooding, and, well, more beachfront makeovers than before. πŸ–οΈ

But here’s where we flip the board: With these pumped-up waves becoming the norm, how will it shape the future of our coastal landscapes and communities? And most importantly, for all the surfers out there, are you ready to ride the giants or will you chill with a margarita on the shore? πŸΉπŸ€”

So, dear reader, here’s our burning question for you: If Mother Nature’s trying to send a message with these mega-waves, are we ready to listen… or just ready to surf? πŸŒŠπŸ„β€β™‚οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
