This peace party has been initiated in Cuba, with everyone on the guest list from top guerrilla commanders to Cuban officials. But here’s the catch, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows yet! The ceasefire starts in stages and only fully kicks in by August. Is this the “era of peace” Colombia’s been waiting for, or just a smoke-screen for the world? 🤔
Hold onto your maracas, because Colombia is playing a new tune of peace! President Gustavo Petro, and Antonio García, the big cheese of the ELN rebels, decided it’s time to put the guns down (well, at least for six months). But, don’t rush to pop the cervezas just yet! This ceasefire is more like a salsa dance, starting slow and going full swing only in August. And, they’ve even planned a national committee by July-end to keep the party going.
Rebel negotiator Pablo Beltrán, painted a pretty picture saying, “This effort to look for peace is a beacon of hope that conflicts can be resolved politically and diplomatically.” But does this ceasefire light the way towards lasting peace, or is it just a flicker before the storm? 🌩️
The six-month ceasefire deal is the latest attempt to untangle a conflict that’s been as twisted as a telenovela plot, dating back to the 1960s. Now, I don’t know about you, but getting two long-time foes to agree on a timeout is as tricky as catching a soap opera star without drama! 😲
Remember that horrifying car bomb incident at Bogotá’s police academy in 2019 that resulted in 21 innocent people losing their lives? Yeah, the ELN guerrillas did that, and peace talks had been suspended faster than a Colombian footballer can score a goal. So, what changed? Well, a little birdie (read: Petro) became Colombia’s first leftist president and reignited the talks. 🕊️
Petro’s been pushing hard for a “total peace” that would mean not just the ELN, but all rebel groups and even the country’s drug trafficking gangs, would put down their guns and ‘peace out’. But here’s the question we’re all itching to ask: Can the ELN’s senior leaders actually convince the younger, more ambitious commanders to hang up their weapons and stop playing ‘narcos’? 🧐
And let’s not forget, this isn’t the first peace party Colombia’s thrown. Back in 2016, the Colombian government and the Farc group were making peace deals, but the fireworks of violence didn’t stop. Even the ELN leaders deny being involved in the drug trafficking, but who are we kidding, right? 🙄
So, while we see the Colombian Prez and the ELN shaking hands, let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture. And more importantly, can Petro manage to convince not just the ELN but also the other rebel groups and drug lords to retire their guns and join the peace parade?
